Plan the access before the painting starts
Exterior painting involves more than reaching the top of a wall. Your decorator may need access for cleaning, preparation, repairs and several coats of paint, as well as work around windows, fascias and awkward corners. Discussing the access early helps avoid ordering scaffolding that does not match the job.
DCF Scaffolding Southwest Limited provides domestic scaffolding for exterior maintenance and renovation projects across Torbay, including Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. We are based nearby in Kingskerswell and work with homeowners and their contractors to understand the access required.
Start with the decorator’s scope of work
Before requesting a quote, establish exactly what will be painted. Is it the whole house or one elevation? Does the work include fascias, soffits, window surrounds or the wall above an extension? Are there render repairs to complete first? Share the decorator’s requirements with us so the scaffold can be assessed around the work rather than a general description of the property.
Do not assume every exterior painting job needs the same access equipment. The appropriate arrangement depends on the work, the property and an assessment of the risks. We can discuss the scaffolding requirements with you and your contractor.
Explain the features around the building
Conservatories, porches, sloping paths and side passages can affect how access is planned. Tell us about features that need to remain accessible, such as your front door, a shared entrance or a route used by neighbours. Include clear ground-level photographs of the elevations and the approach to the property.
If you think the proposed scaffold could affect a pavement or other public area, flag this when enquiring so the relevant arrangements can be checked before dates are agreed.
Allow time for preparation as well as painting
A programme that only counts the days spent applying paint can overlook cleaning, scraping, filling and drying time. Ask your decorator for a realistic estimate and explain whether another trade needs access first. Weather can also affect the work, so discuss the hire period and what happens if the programme changes.
Scaffolding provides access; it does not automatically provide weather protection. If protection or containment is required, raise it at the enquiry stage so its suitability and scope can be assessed separately.
Plan around an occupied home
Let us know whether you will remain in the property, where vehicles normally park and which areas need to be kept available. Discuss deliveries, garden access and any arrangements affecting neighbouring properties before the work begins. Clear communication between the homeowner, decorator and scaffolder helps everyone work to the same plan.
Could other maintenance use the same access?
Before the scaffold is specified, consider whether gutter repairs or other planned exterior work could be coordinated with the painting. Tell us about every trade that intends to use it. Sharing access must be planned and agreed; it should not be assumed that a scaffold specified for one task is suitable for another.
